Ali
So St. Louis
Grimm Score: 3 out of 5
Ali has been a pillar to his group the St. Lunatics and to the city of St. Louis since 1993. From releasing his own album “Heavy Starch” in 2002, to dropping a collaboration album with Big Gipp in 2007, to being featured on almost every Lunatics album in existence, the president of Derrty Entertainment is too bold and determined for anyone to deny. Ali’s new mixtape, “So St. Louis” looks to invigorate the streets of his hometown for the summertime. Be that as it may, the languid and slow flow rapper relapses with a depthless release that sounds somewhat similar to his first album.
The first four songs are all about Ali rhyming about his superficial lifestyle referencing money, clothes, chains, rims and cars. “Been Did That” featuring Jibbs and “That Say A Lot” featuring Ruka Puff both portray heavily on those topics. Murphy Lee provides a little lyrical relief on “Side 2 Side” to cover the horrific, stumbling flow of their Lunatic brother Kyjuan.
The mixtape picks up some momentum however with “I Luv Dat” which also features Murphy Lee and has a beat that will keep your head bobbing. “Polo” and “Headboard” are both certain to be fan favorites and could possibly be radio singles. “Hustle Stack Flip” featuring Supa Sag has Ali dropping great lines like, “Somebody call Martin Luther, somebody call Malcolm X/ Call Clarence 13 and tell them what’s happenin’/ Tell them it’s still war and the worlds still drama/ Tell them all thank you for sending us Barack Obama”. “Ask No Price” with City Spud and Chocolate Tai is one of the better beats to fit Ali’s flow as well as “Do Ya Bizzness”. If Ali stuck to more beats like this, he would sound less drowsy and be much easier to listen to.
Ali can be captivating and exciting when he raps over the right beat but lethargic at times. Despite all of that, “So St. Louis” is a decent mixtape that the streets should look out for. “So St. Louis” gets a Grimm Score of 3 out of 5.

Below is a random tirade I went on about St. Louis hip hop... these are becoming rare because
1. I don't have time to regurgitate the same shit I've been preaching for over a decade
and
2. Judging from from tweets, status updates and what I see cats doing on a day to day, its a complete waste of time. The majority of those who would benefit from listening are hell bent on finding out the hard way... so who am I to throw a life preserver at someone who knew…
